GM China plans 10 new electrified cars by 2023

Regulations around the world have continued to reshape automakers’ future product plans — and that means more electrified cars.

GM China announced on Tuesday that in addition to the 10 models already planned, it plans to introduce 10 more electric cars locally. In the announcement, GM said the first batch of 10 electric or new energy vehicles started in 2016 and will continue through 2020. Another 10 electrified models will arrive between 2021 and 2023.

It’s important to note that “electric” covers a variety of vehicles: mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric cars.

Among the first electrified models from the American automaker’s local joint venture partners, GM-SAIC-Wuling, are the Cadillac CT6 Plug-In, the Buick Velite 5 (a re-skinned Chevrolet Volt) and the Baojun E100, a tiny battery electric. city car. In the near future, Buick will also introduce the Velite 6 plug-in and the Velite 6 EV.

The announcement follows GM’s promise to introduce 20 new all-electric vehicles by 2023. It’s unclear if all 20 electric cars will appear in North America, but China almost certainly will. The country has adopted policies that reward the purchase of new energy vehicles, including high levels of vehicle incentives.
“China plays a fundamental role in the journey to a zero-emissions future, and General Motors intends to help make it happen,” said Matt Tsien, GM executive vice president and president of GM China.

GM launched its first battery electric car in late 2017, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which has an EPA-rated range of 238 miles. Clearly, the Bolt EV is just the beginning of the automaker’s electrification strategy.
