My classic car: Passing on the legacy

My grandfather had it a 1968 Chevrolet El Camino that he kept in his storage building for years. He always talked about how I was going to do this when he passed away. Every time we showed up at a family gathering, he started it or we all walked around and could touch it.

There was also a 1955 Chevrolet, a 1965 Ford Econoline and a 1937 Chevrolet pickup. The family always said that I choose the litter. When he sadly passed away, I ended up at El Camino, which was under 8,000 miles.

To make it a shining example of my grandfather, I replaced the entire brake system, fuel tank, fuel pump, engine, transmission, most of the electrical, and the seat. This includes a complete suspension rebuild, so everything has been done so far except for the paint job. Grandfather’s legacy can be read on the back glass.

One day it will go to my kids along with the rest of his vehicles. I don’t think I actually own these treasures. My only goal is to keep them until I pass them on to someone else who respects them. Rest in peace Alton Ridings. Every time I turn the key I say your name and I hope I did as you hoped.

-A truly humble grandson, Jake R., Kentucky
