Chevy unveils special Camaro celebrating the 2023 Indy 500

Chevrolet revealed it last week a 2023 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible created to celebrate the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 this year.

The car is the latest in a long line of Indy 500 Festival Event Cars and 50 examples were built. All 50 were unveiled together at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home to what is currently the highlight of the IndyCar season.

Based on the Camaro SS, the car is powered by a 6.2-liter V-8 with 455 horsepower. It features the new Sharkskin Metallic color added to the Camaro’s 2023 option list and unique Indy 500 graphics designed by Chevy specifically for the car.

The introduction of the Festival Event Car dates back to the 1960s and is used as part of the pre-Indy 500 festivities. The cars are driven on public roads by various officials before the race and eventually sold. when the race is over.

A Chevy spokesperson confirmed Automotive news (subscription required) to sell the latest Festival cars after the race scheduled for May 28. Cars come with a unique option code.

Chevy confirmed the The Camaro will bow out after the 2024 model year and that production will end next January. That means this is likely the last Camaro Festival Event car, and likely the last special edition Camaro, at least in its current form.

Chevy has hinted that the Camaro story isn’t over yet, although rumors dating back to 2021 suggest that Chevy will make the Camaro a electric performance sedan. Other speculations are that it will come as an electric SUV and that the The Corvette may also get an electric SUV version as part of an expanded lineup.
