At the age of 15 I there was a paper route, I had been working since I was 12, so I had some money in the bank. I found an ad for a 1962 Austin-Healey Mark II Tri Carb Roadster at a local PennySaver. The asking price was $900, so I talked my mom into taking me to see it while my dad was at work. We liked it and I ended up paying full price for this car. Then I drove 10 miles home without a license, which pissed my dad off when he got home.
The car needed work, but it had everything. It was painted green, which looked horrible, and someone installed saddlebags. It was my first car and I had it for three years before selling it for $1200.
When I started my family not long after, I asked my wife if I could have another one. This time I got a 1967 Mark III green with a black interior and in 1982 it only had 35,000 miles on it. This second Healey cost $20,000, a slight increase from $900. I had it for 10 years before I sold it. I’ve owned a lot of cars over the years, including Corvettes, which I still own, and Shelbys, and I’ve had them.
I love all vintage cars, but I have a special place for Austin-Healeys. My third Healey was a 1963 Mark II. Hindsight is 20/20 and I really should have kept the ’62.
