Mini offers an all-electric convertible, but not in the US

Manufactured by Mini first fully electric convertible. The Mini Electric Cabrio will be available in April 2023 in a limited run of 999 units available in Europe only, with 150 units being offered in the UK only. However, none make it across the lake to the United States.

The Mini electric vehicle is powered by a 184 horsepower (135 kW) electric motor that propels the convertible from 0-60 mph in 8.2 seconds, with a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) range of 124 miles. This limited edition Mini is priced at £52,500 ($63,000) and is made from recycled materials to reduce CO2 emissions during production.

“Three years ago we launched the MINI Electric, and now one in five MINIs sold in Europe is a fully electric MINI. This success prompted us to realize a small series of the MINI Electric Convertible within a few months. I am delighted to be able to offer our 999 MINI customers an extraordinary and exclusive open-air go-kart experience,” says Stefanie Wurst, Head of the MINI brand.

The latest Mini EV is only available with Enigmatic Black or White Silver exterior trim, door handles, side lights, and Resolute Bronze trim for the front and rear lights. Consecutive numbering on the side windows and door sills indicates which of the 999 available units is yours. The interior surfaces are finished in piano black, complemented by Mini Electric ambient lighting with yellow hues. The Mini Electric Cabrio rides on 17-inch Electric Power Spoke two-tone alloy wheels made of 100% secondary aluminum.

As mentioned earlier, the Mini Electric Convertible is not available in the US, but you can buy it Mini Cooper SE (Small Electric) two-door hardtop with 181 hp engine and 114 miles of range on a full charge. The general lack of acceptance of electric vehicles in the US may have led to Mini exiting the US market with the electric convertible, but in the end this is just the reporter’s guess.

The Mini EV droptop could do well in the U.S. with its “open go-kart” driving experience, showing doubters that you don’t need an internal combustion engine to have fun behind the wheel. Unfortunately, a Mini Electric Cabrio won’t be coming to the U.S. anytime soon (or possibly at all), yet another example of America falling behind as the auto industry moves forward with alternative forms of propulsion. I realize that an electric car with only 999 produced is a drop in the ocean of cars, but every electric vehicle can help mobility reduce emissions and create a better tomorrow.
