Review: 2023 Lexus UX 250h F Sport

Lexus calls it the UX 250h a crossover SUV with best-in-class turning radius and fuel efficiency. We call it a luxury hatchback with crossover pretense. Yes, you can get an AWD version of the UX, but the ability to distribute traction isn’t a crossover SUV. However, the version of the 2023 Lexus UX 250h we reviewed—the F Sport Handling AWD—is a stylish luxury crossover SUV that boasts many features found in many SUVs in its price range, but few in the U.S. market as a hatchback.

However, combining style, luxury and performance in a package unusual in the crossover class, the Lexus UX 250h may appeal more to those who want to experience fuel efficiency and luxury without climbing into a 5,000-pound vehicle. . Be sure to check out the video below for an in-depth look at the features and performance of this quasi-SUV.

The Lexus UX 250h has plenty of creases and creases to complement the triangular theme that Lexus went for several years ago. These days, the spindle grille has found its stunner after being unassumingly affixed to the nose of every Lexus, not unlike 20 years ago when Audi decided it needed to grow its grille exponentially. As such, the UX 250h feels like a mini-Lexus RX at times, with enough utility to make it 17.1cm behind the second row to Whole Foods, but with a Home Depot shopping list limited to tools and glue.

For its target market, the US 250h looks a bit sporty, although we are not the target market and our opinion may differ. However, the UX 250h can look sportier when you step up the trim levels from the base, which includes colored ‘over-fenders’ wheel arches, a more aggressive front fascia and a black contrast roof, the latter two features of both F Sport models. , Planning and Management. Both F Sports get 18-inch F Sport alloy wheels that subtly distinguish themselves from the 18-inchers on the base and UX 250h Premium models.

The choice of color does not help the indecisive, as there are nine colors to choose from. If you choose the UX 250h F Sport Handling, the choice of colors is limited to six, and our test car is the Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0.

The interior of the 2023 Lexus UX 250h F Sport Handling is a mix of (surprise!) luxury and sport. The F Sport Handling model offers highly attractive sport seats with custom upholstery, racing-inspired instruments, aluminum pedals and front door scuff plates, perforated leather steering wheel and shift knob, and more. Inside, there’s plenty of legroom and headroom for front and rear passengers, although we wouldn’t recommend three in the back unless they know each other very well.

All UX 250h models except the F Sport Handling get a standard eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, but the F Sport Handling gets a 12.3-inch upgrade; optionally available for the UX 250h Premium. Likewise, all models except the F Sport Handling come with a seven-inch color multi-information display (aka “dashboard”), while the F Sport Handling’s essential information is displayed on a one-inch larger screen.

Performance

All variants of the Lexus UX 250h are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor to produce a combined 181 horsepower—seeming more like a bench warmer for such sporting demands. Like most hybrid powertrains, it’s mated to a continuously variable transmission that delivers smooth acceleration, though no one would accuse it of snappiness. In fact, Lexus’ own tests suggest that the FWD version is faster than the AWD version, which is contrary to most cars. The UX 250h is EPA-estimated at 41 city, 38 highway and 39 combined, which is pretty generous for a car disguised as an SUV.

The bright side of the UX 250h F Sport Handling is the sport-tuned suspension for a firm yet comfortable ride, and the Handling model offers more driving modes to live up to its name. The steering is precise and responsive, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces compared to the average crossover. Our UX 250h F Sport Handling model also featured all-wheel drive, which is optional for all UX models.

Conclusion

Overall, the 2023 Lexus UX 250h F Sport is a great luxury subcompact but lackluster crossover SUV. Some may be drawn to the unique blend of performance, style and efficiency, but don’t expect anything more than your typical hatchback. The UX 250h F Sport Handling model lends a sporty look to the passenger compartment and sometimes provides driving momentum, while the hybrid powertrain provides a smooth but unexciting driving experience. With its advanced safety features and excellent fuel economy, the UX 250h F Sport is a solid choice for those looking for a luxury subcompact, but if you need practicality and driving pleasure, there are more traditional crossovers to choose from. patch.
