The Maserati GT2 turns the MC20 into a real racing car

Last year, Maserati presented the racing version of the MC20 supercar, and now it finally shows the real thing. The car dropped the MC20 name altogether and became just the Maserati GT2. It’s a little odd considering it’s still an MC20 at its core, but the race car is still pretty sweet regardless.

Significant external changes were made to make the GT2 a racing car. Vents, louvres and intakes are everywhere and much larger. All this is in the service of increased clamping force and enhanced cooling. In addition to the additional holes, the GT2 has flat undercarriage, a larger diffuser and a huge adjustable rear wing.

The carbon fiber chassis is the same as the MC20 and still uses double wishbone suspension front and rear. But the geometry has been updated and it uses custom shocks, springs and roll bars. And of course they are all adjustable. Braking power is provided by six-piston front calipers, four-piston rear calipers and ventilated steel rotors.

The engine is also pretty much the same as in a regular MC20, with Maserati quoting the same 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. However, the performance of the twin-turbo Nettuno V6 can be adjusted based on the balance of the performance requirements of the competitions. Capable of higher overall boost pressure and reduced back pressure in the open exhaust pipe. Instead of an eight-speed automatic, it opts for a six-speed sequential manual transmission and a race-ready limited-slip differential.

His insides are expected to be gutted. Instead of the more luxurious MC20 cockpit, the GT2 gets racing-specific seats, a multi-function steering wheel and controls, and a screen for the instruments. It also has a roll cage and a six-point racing harness. Although many of the niceties are gone, the GT2 still has air conditioning.

Maserati offers the GT2 to professional racing teams for regular racing and to private owners for track and occasional racing. The company expects the car to appear in the Fanatec GT2 European series later this year, and the year-round race next year.
