BMW confirmed on Monday that a new M5 Touring is in the works, only the third after the late 1980s/early ’90s E34 M5 Touring and the 2000s E60 M5 Touring.
The automaker also released the first photos of a camouflaged prototype that will begin public testing in the coming days. The debut was scheduled for 2024. This is probably when the new M5 sedan will debut.
Although the prototype may resemble the test vehicles a designed car body for the redesigned ones 2024 BMW 5 Seriessignature M cues like pumped-up fenders, quad exhaust tips, and a large wheel and brake package confirm that it’s an M5 Touring.
BMW started a year ago the first M3 Touringand BMW M performance boss Frank van Meel teased in an interview that year an M5 Touring eventually you can join it.
The redesigned 5 Series sedan was unveiled in May, and sales will begin later this year as a 2024 model. While its M5 sedan version should make it to the US, it’s unclear if the same will be true for the M5 Touring. The M3 Touring has already been banned in this market. Mercedes-Benz no longer offers the AMG E 63 wagon in the United States, although Audi still does the RS 6 Avant here.
BMW is going the hybrid route for its next M5, and the powertrain will likely pair a turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 with a single electric motor for a combined output of more than 700 horsepower. The same setup functions a 2023 XM SUVIt produces 738 horsepower in the top category XM Label Red grade.
Electricity-prone high-performance fans are also optional with the new Series 5. BMW M has developed an i5 M60 xDrive grade that will be offered in BMW Touring wagon guise starting next spring (though probably not in the US). The i5 M60 xDrive features a twin-motor all-wheel drive powertrain that produces a peak power of 590 horsepower.
