Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach 2023 Preview

Barrett-Jackson perennial 2023 Palm Beach Auction it will happen in Florida before you know it. The April 13-15 event offers the same quality and variety of vehicles as our Scottsdale coverage, but with a twist as America is an archipelago of states and subcultures that keeps things interesting. So what will be interesting in Palm Beach? Here are some handpicked vehicles to pique your interest.

1948 Allard L Type Roadster
I don’t know Allards other than they are very desirable early British sports cars. They were hybrids, most often using Ford and Mercury flathead V8s. although there were a few Allard Palm Beach roadsters built with the Chrysler 331 Hemi.

The L-Type was a four-seat roadster offered with one of the flatheads, this one with the 221ci Ford. However, this example is a two-seater on the longer 112-inch wheelbase, so perhaps someone from England can explain whether this Allard is more unique and special than the others.

1957 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer Super D-500
Dodge was arguably the most gorgeous of the 1957 Forward Look series, but it also looks the toughest to these eyes, especially in top-of-the-line Custom Royal, Lancer two-door hardtop guise. Doesn’t it look ready to take off? The Chrysler 300-C may be king, but the Dodge has its own charm.

Even more fascinating was the engine: the Super D-500, which was a twin-four Red Ram 325 Hemi with 310 horsepower. Backed by Chrysler’s famous TorqueFlite, this push-button Dodge is the real thing.

1969 Dick Harrell Camaro
You may be familiar with the 427 COPO Camaros, but before they existed, several performance-oriented shops and dealerships installed 427s over the 350s and 396s. Yenko, Nickey, and many others seem to get the glory, but drag racer Dick Harrell enlisted both dealerships to develop a 427 Camaro conversion.

This 1969 Camaro SS is an original Dick Harrell Performance Center conversion. Starting out as the Rallye Green “X66” 396 Camaro, Harrell’s shop bought a 427, added an aftermarket Stinger hood with top-to-bottom striping, Kelsey-Hayes Stripper tabs wrapped in offset Goodyear Polyglas tires, and whatever else the original owner specified. .

1980 Jeep J10 Honcho pickup
Jeep pickups weren’t common when I was a kid. Looking on the Internet, one source shows 6,839 were made, so that’s self-explanatory, although they don’t mention whether it’s a model year or a calendar year. THE Honcho Gift Pack fancy white wheels, striping, black and chrome grille and more.

Only 1,264 Honchos are said to have been built between 1976 and ’83, and here’s a nice ’80 with a frame-on restoration. Power is provided by AMC’s capable 360, backed by a three-speed automatic. They took some liberties with the grill, but no one can deny that it looks good, especially with that denim interior.
